Pin Header Overview:

A pin header is a type of connector, commonly known in English as Pin Header.

This type of connector is widely used in PCB circuit boards across electronics, electrical appliances, and instruments. It serves as a bridge between interrupted or isolated circuits, carrying current or signal transmission. It is typically paired with female headers to form board-to-board connections, with electronic wire harness terminals to form board-to-wire connections, or used independently for board-to-board connections.

Pin headers have earned a reputation as the universal connector. They are usually paired with female headers, wire-end connectors, and other connector types. However, as competition in the pin header connector market intensifies, some manufacturers have cut costs by using lower-grade plating (imitation gold) and materials such as bronze-clad steel and alloys, which also reduces product performance and service life.

Pin Header Types:

Because different products require different specifications, pin headers are available in a wide range of models and sizes. According to the electronics industry standard for pin header connectors, they are classified as follows:

By pitch, they can be roughly divided into five categories: 2.54mm, 2.00mm, 1.27mm, 1.00mm, and 0.8mm. By row count, there are single-row, dual-row, triple-row, and other configurations. By mounting style, there are SMT surface-mount options (horizontal mount/vertical mount) and DIP through-hole options (straight/right-angle). By installation orientation: 180° is indicated by S, 90° by W, and SMT by T.

Manufacturing Process: The pin header manufacturing process mainly includes: first, contact pins are precisely machined from brass (or phosphor bronze) according to specifications, then plated with nickel followed by gold as required. Next, the insulator body is molded. Finally, the pins are inserted into the insulator on specialized equipment according to dimensional requirements.

Rectangular contact pins feature a cross-section of 0.8×1.6mm and a rated current of 7.5A. The female socket has at least two independent spring clips and four contact points, and its structure is designed to prevent incorrect insertion. The 254/I series square contact pins feature a cross-section of 0.64×0.64mm. Both pin types above use a blunt-edge corner design, making them suitable for high-frequency technology applications. The contact areas of the pins and sockets are gold-plated for excellent corrosion resistance, low contact resistance, and high reliability.
